The duo

About Old Rusty Sax

Two Maryland musicians. One raw, soulful sound. Decades of stages, stories, and strings between them.

Jay Cleaver and Russ Hinshaw of Old Rusty Sax

Our story

Where Rust Meets Soul

Old Rusty Sax was born out of a shared love for music that doesn't apologize for itself — rock that spans more than 5 decades, blues that aches, Americana that breathes, and smooth jazz that relaxes. Jay and Russ met on the Maryland music circuit and quickly discovered their instruments were made to talk to each other.

What started as late-night jam sessions turned into a full-time duo that's played everything from intimate wine bars to outdoor events, private weddings to packed local bars & restaurants. With more than 450 songs in their repertoire, the name says it all: a little worn, a little weathered, and all the better for it.

The Players

Jay Cleaver

Saxes · Woodwinds · Vocals

Jay has been blowing reeds since he he was in 2nd grade.  He attributes his love of music to his Father, who was a big fan of Benny Goodman.  Jay  fell hard for bands like Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears in the late 60's and never looked back, he brings a fluid, expressive voice to every performance — whether he's wailing on tenor sax, floating on soprano or flute, or stepping up to the mic. His tone is warm, his phrasing is conversational, and his solos have a way of stopping a room cold.

Jay's Mentor on sax was the great Boots Randolf.  He got a chance to meet & hear him three times!

Russ Hinshaw

Guitars · Vocals

Russ is the kind of guitarist who makes it look effortless — which means he's been working at it for thirty years. His playing draws from blues, country, and classic rock, with a fingerpicking style that can hold down the rhythm and cut loose with a lead in the same breath. As a vocalist, he brings a gritty warmth that pairs perfectly with Jay's melodic flights.

Russ owns more guitars than he'll admit to and insists each one sounds different.
